Platteklip Gorge to Upper Cable Station via Maclears Beacon, Table Mountain National Park
Platteklip Gorge is the oldest and most direct hiking route up Table Mountain. It is very well marked and takes about 2hrs to complete and 3 hrs to reach Maclears Beacon. There is barely any shade on this route until you approach the summit and can be extremely hot during the summer months so a good sunhat and sunscreen are advised. It is the suggested route for amateurs and first time Table Mountain hikers as it is very difficult to get lost. You can choose to walk around at the top and then walk back down or cable car down and then head back to the trailhead along the tar road. Maclear's Beacon is 1,086 metres (3,563 ft) above sea level, 19 metres (62 ft) higher than the upper cable car station. The structure consists of man made rock packed in a triangle form, being 5 metres (16 ft) high.
